Guest Blogger: Francine Pascal on The Sweet Life E-Serial

The Sweet Life E-SerialThis is a guest blog from Francine Pascal, creator of the Sweet Valley High series.

The minute I heard the idea, I knew I would love it. It was simple and irresistible: An e-serial of six novellas that would run every week all summer long.  No one had ever done anything like that before. I would be the first.  I love to be first.

I even had a title for it, The Sweet Life.  I would pick it up three years after Sweet Valley Confidential-Ten Years Later and of course, I’d use all my favorite Sweet Valley characters. But this time I would go deep into their new lives with no holds barred.  I figure at thirty, I can make them as sexy as I want, sexy enough to make Desperate Housewives look like a Sunday sermon.

Creating plots is one of my favorite parts of writing.  I’d done hundreds of them for Sweet Valley and Fearless and consider it my forte.  But these would be novellas and each book would have cliff hangers and hook endings, more like a TV series or Dickens if you want to be classier.  In any case I’d do them so you wouldn’t be able to wait for the next one. The Good Wife would be my paradigm.

The Sweet Life will unfold over six contiguous novellas starring the twins, of course, and Todd, Bruce, Ken and Lila.  And for villains (you’re only as good as your heavy), all those secondary characters you’ve learned to hate over the years.  And some new ones who are even more dangerous.

Here’s a challenge: I defy anyone to know at the end of each book where it is going.
