Early Preview of Free Software Update for Kindle

Latest Generation Kindle Software Update We’re excited to tell you about some new features coming to the latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G:

•    Public Notes – This feature lets Kindle users choose to make their book notes and highlights available for others to see.  Any Kindle user – including authors, their fans, book reviewers, professors and passionate readers everywhere – can opt-in to share their thoughts on book passages and ideas with friends, family members, colleagues, and the greater Kindle community of people who love to read.  This is a new way for readers to share their excitement and knowledge about books and get more from the books they read.  To review and turn on Public Notes in your own books, view the Public Notes of people you follow, track your reading activities, see Popular Highlights and your annotations, and view your full library of books, go to http://kindle.amazon.com.

•    Real Page Numbers – Our customers have told us they want real page numbers that match the page numbers in print books so they can easily reference and cite passages, and read alongside others in a book club or class.  Rather than add page numbers that don’t correspond to print books, which is how page numbers have been added to e-books in the past, we’re adding real page numbers that correspond directly to a book’s print edition. We’ve already added real page numbers to tens of thousands of Kindle books, including the top 100 bestselling books in the Kindle Store that have matching print editions and thousands more of the most popular books.  Page numbers will also be available on our free “Buy Once, Read Everywhere” Kindle apps in the coming months. As with all of Kindle’s features, we want you to lose yourself in the author’s words, so Page Numbers are only displayed when you press the Menu button.

•    Before You Go… – When you reach the end of the book, we will now offer a seamless experience that lets you immediately rate the book, share a message about the book with your social network, get personalized recommendations for what to read next, and see more books by the same author.

•    New Newspaper and Magazine Layout – We’re introducing a new and improved layout for newspapers and magazines.  This new layout gives you a quick snapshot of the news and helps you decide what you want to read first.

Latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G customers who want to try an Early Preview of these new features can manually download the software update here. All latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G customers will receive this software update automatically via Wi-Fi once it becomes available. We will update the Kindle Community forum when we complete the Early Preview and begin to automatically deliver the update.

Will the 2nd gen kindle get any update that includes page numbers?

Will this software update be available for the Kindle DX and Kindle DX Graphite?

Amazon, it is miserly to not make this available for Kindle 2. Since it looks like there are no more updates to Kindle 2 in the works, I guess I am going to buy a new Android tablet or iPad and start buying books from Google and/or Apple so I can more effectively annotate and reference pages in books/pdfs for school.

Would love to see this on tho Kindle 2 as well.

OK this makes a lot of sense dude. Wow.

I would have to put in a vote for the Kindle 2 as well! Amazon, support your users, or they won't be your users for long!

When will Kindle software include lending books from public libraries?

I definitly think that this should also go the the 2nd gen kindle as well.

Please let us select our own screen savers. I'm tired of having creepy dead people pop up on my screen when it goes into screen-saver mode.

Yikes, as someone who paid quite a lot more for a Kindle 2 before the third-gen came out, I'm disappointed at the implication that I won't get to benefit from this update (without buying a new device).

Please consider bringing this update to the Kindle 2!

Developing features on only the K3 hardware is a disgrace, as is the half-hearted, half-assed KDK program. I will never purchase Amazon technology again, even if Apple is my only other option. I only hope my DX-G can still pull a few bucks on eBay.

How about something useful.

Allow kindle browser to download, PDF and MP3 from the web when its on wi-fi.

Since the kindle browser doesn't allow extra windows, allow the links to that target new to target top so you can follow a link from a webpage or a link from gmail.

Come on Amazon, how could you write a blog post like this and not address the question of whether earlier generation Kindles will be getting this update?

Is it in the works? Is there some technical reason it can't be done?

When you don't bother to answer such an obvious question, you leave us all wondering if the real reason is because you don't care.

I enjoy the price benefit and immediacy (being able to purchase and read a book from anywhere) of the ebook format but it still has some way to go:

1. The page numbers will address the irritating reference points used at the moment.
2. Poor editing, particularly paragraph and section breaks, redundant hyphenation that is carried over from the printed edition.
3. I miss the traditional layout - the cover, dedication, different fonts, author bio, other books by the author, etc.

These aren't technical issues, so why can't they be addressed?

I like the new software update, esp. the page numbering and newspaper layout. Thank you!!

"All latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G customers will receive this software update automatically via Wi-Fi once it becomes available."

I hope Amazon meant "via Whispernet," because I don't have a WiFi connection set up, or any plans to do so, not having access to one. Is this update something that requires a lot of data transfer, for instance to send all-new copies of the user's books? That would explain why WiFi or USB might be needed.

I definitely would like to see this on the Kindle 2. I've been a Kindle user since Oprah talked about it on her show. I am on my 2nd Kindle and I think it is so unfair for them to not continue to support the Kindle 2.

Seriously, I hope these features are coming to the Kindle 2.

I agree with the other 2nd generation Kindle owners (I am one) who believes this update should be available to us, too!

I agree with the other Kindle 2 users. This needs to be umade available for our Kindles as weill. I had expected an explanation at the least. Pehpas my next e-reader will be a nook.

So, wait a minute. Let me understand your logic here Amazon. I have a Kindle 2, and I get no page numbers. I have the Kindle App on my iPad, and I do get page numbers. Why would I ever buy another Kindle device? Since I'm going to be using my iPad, you do realize my first choice will always be iBooks, right?. You just forced a longtime Kindle customer to your competition with your bad decision. Looks like I'll be spending my time at the iBook store from now on. Toodles...

Gotta love all these threats from older Kindle owners saying they'll go to iPad or and Android tablet in retaliation.

Good idea. Go to Apple, who will pretty much force you to upgrade after 2 years in order to get the best new features for a software update, or an Android device, where updates to the latest version of Android are never guaranteed, and take forever to come out.

Brilliant idea, to opt to buy more expensive hardware to experience the same thing in a couple years.

Almost as much as you love pretentious douchbags who assume it's just a threat. I actually left Kindle behind months and months ago when I bought my iPad. I gave my Kindle 2 to an older woman down the street. The Kindle 2 was one of the few devices I've actually regretted buying, even more so after getting my iPad. My original comment was just suggesting that Amazon was going to be pushing even more of its customer base into the arms of the competition. I'm already gone. I just checked this page to see if the Kindle App on my iPad would get the update, and it will. Yay for me...

Kindle 2 support!

The post does not say that the updates will not be available for previous kindle editions. Just that the beta version (aka "early preview") will not be.

Stop skimming.
